Falls prevention

CCS Group March 4, 2022

Wile E. Coyote can fall into a deep canyon without injury. Unfortunately, we can’t! So why do we have trouble paying attention to the hazards around us? The following items represent the bulk of the exposure to falls on a construction site. Ladders: Always use the right ladder. Set them on level ground and tie them off at the top (for security). Do not over reach. Do not over extend yourself on the ladder. Always face the ladder and try to use both hands when climbing. Floor Openings: Floor openings should be properly covered. Covers must be able to support walls the same as the floor. Covers should be firmly attached to the floor/walking/working surface. Covers should be marked as such. For example: “Cover,” or “Do Not Remove Floor Opening Cover.” Read More

Dressing for cold weather work

CCS Group February 10, 2022

Dressing for cold weather work Cold weather work requires appropriate clothing for both safety and productivity reasons. Here are some great tips from CCS Group's Safety Director Tyler Pollock on dressing for winter work. • Always dress in layers with outer layers rather loose and inner layers tighter to the body to trap body heat. • Do not over bundle. • The outer layer of your clothing should serve as a windbreaker which will make the layers underneath more effective. • Minimize sweating; if you begin to feel hot, remove a layer of clothing. Avoid wet clothing as once they are wet, they do not serve as good protection from the cold. • Wear head protection to increase your overall warmth. Over half of the body’s heat loss comes from the head. • Be sure to properly protect your Read More

Incident Investigations

CCS Group February 26, 2019

Accurate, detailed, complete information is key to determining a quick effective analysis and corrective action. The following is an example of an effective investigation format: • Incident response: Immediately after an incident occurs, control or eliminate any hazards or threats, and arrange for medical attention to be provided as necessary. Secure the scene of the incident to assure that evidence is preserved for investigators. • Data collection: Thoroughly document the incident scene using methods such as photographs, video, diagrams, and collect any physical evidence that can easily be removed from the scene. Interview witnesses, victims, and other individuals to create a complete and objective account of the incident. • Analysis: Analyze the collected data to determine Read More

CCS Group Implements New Shooting Hoods

CCS Group October 30, 2018

CCS recently purchased several of the self-contained shooting helmets to be used when placing shotcrete. The original purpose was to provide more comfort and protection from rebound, for our shooters. We immediately realized that beyond the helmets comfort and protection, they make it easier for the shooter to get a little closer to their work and see better and longer due to the tear-off lense covers that can be added. This makes for faster and more efficient placement of the shotcrete.  The built-in fans keep the air inside the helmet circulating, allowing for fog free visibility and cooling for the head and face of the shooter. The final and most important advantage of these helmets is that they add to our compliance with the new Silica Read More

Shotcrete vs. Gunite

CCS Group February 8, 2018

Shotcrete is a wet mix system with minimal additional water requirements. The shotcrete is quality-controlled and pre-mixed to meet engineering and structural requirements. The shotcrete is batched by computer, mixed in a truck, then poured into a pump — allowing a safer and faster application, and less fatigue on the nozzelman.   Wet-mix is a cleaner and safer process, among many other advantages: Documented by batch tickets and additional material can be acquired quickly Shooting does not alter the quality of the mix Weather does not impact installation Shotcrete bonds with the existing concrete better Mix is consistent and standard throughout the bin which minimizes human error Shotcrete placement encapsulates reinforcing steel consistently Cure time is Read More
