Crack & Spalling Repair: Be Vigilant and Avoid Unnecessary Concrete Damage
Cracking or spalling concrete is can occur for any number of reasons, but it’s important to note that these situations require immediate attention. Spalling may indicate moisture penetration of steel reinforcement, which may lead to corrosion if left untreated. Causes of concrete cracking and spalling may include:
- Moisture migration through the concrete into the steel reinforcement
- Lack of steel reinforcement
- Limited concrete coverage of steel reinforcement
- Drying shrinkage, common cure cracking
- Thermal expansion
- Increased applied load of grain silos

Five Step Spall Repair Process – ICRI code 310.1R-2008:
- Cut or grind out spalling area, using a chisel or chipping hammer.
- Expose steel reinforcement and remove any corroding delamination.
- Treat exposed steel with a steel rust inhibitor.
- Right angle cut the spalled area to receive a concrete patching compound.
- Encase all reinforcing steel and smooth the concrete patch until level with existing surface.
